1. The Regional Office (What is it?)
It is the focal point of all IFLA activities in the Region with the responsibility to
maintain and disseminate the information generated by it.

2. Objectives
In accordance with IFLA, which stimulates and promotes research and development in
librarianship all over the world, the objectives of the Office in the area of Latin America and
the Caribbean are as follow:
- to promote and strengthen national and regional associations by encouraging them to join
IFLA;
- to foment the development of libraries and information service activities;
- to increase participation in IFLA Core Programmes.

3. How does it operate?
The Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean is linked to the Latin America and
Caribbean Section of IFLA's Regional Activities Division.
It operates in the area of Latin America and the Caribbean in order to facilitate the work
of the Federation in this region.
The Regional Office and the Regional Activities Division work in close cooperation with the
IFLA Core Programme for the Advancement of Librarianship (ALP) in order to promote improvements
in information services in the developing countries.

4. Activities of the Regional Office
- It operates as a distributor of IFLA's publications;
- It publishes and delivers the IFLA/LAC "Newsletter";
- It maitains a clearinghouse, with a collection of IFLA documents to be used in the
Region, supplying photocopies of such materials;
- It identifies, together with the regional section and its members, projects of interest
to be developed in the Region and submits them to the ALP Programme;
- It divulges the grants, funds and competitions for the Region;
- It is represented at the IFLA General Conferences by its Regional Manager.

5. Clearinghouse
Its function is to collect and organize IFLA's publications in order to:
- store and index works;
- divulge, stimulate and facilitate access to same by professionals and users of the
Region;
- supply information about IFLA;
- cooperate with other clearinghouses;
- maintain data bases of received publications (Micro -Isis).

7. Newsletter
The Newsletter is published twice a year in June and December by IFLA's Regional Office for
Latin America and the Caribbean. It contains news about IFLA and its Sections, IFLA affiliates
and members in the Region, news of interest to the Region and a list of publications received.
